It speaks to the quiet victories of my everyday existence and the brilliance of dreaming boldly in a world that often tries to dim the glow of Black expression. I aim to create a space where vulnerability meets strength, and where the richness of my identity is not just seen but deeply felt through this exhibition."

This body of work explores the tension between cultural memory and the fragmentation of identity experienced by first-generation Americans. Rooted in the visual language of ancestral iconography, dance music culture, and the ritual of movement, the exhibition brings together murals, textile pieces, and paintings that function as remixed archives of personal and collective history. Drawing inspiration from the aesthetics of rave posters, Caribbean color sensibilities, and mythological motifs, the works reflect on themes of hybridity, healing, and transformation. By layering vibrant patterns, hieroglyphics, and symbols sampled from her Mexican, Cuban, and Guyanese heritage, Catherine Rupan Mapp creates immersive environments that invite viewers to reflect on their own connections to place, identity, and community. The exhibition becomes both a celebration and a reconciliation—honoring the past while navigating what it means to belong in the present.
This exhibition will be on display from September 30-November 9, 2025 in the Patricia Barland Gallery at Chesapeake Arts Center.
DIRECTIONS: Chesapeake Arts Center's address is 194 Hammonds Lane, Brooklyn Park, MD 21225. For Vincent Price, Jr., all signs point towards happiness and success as he prepares to graduate from medical school and start his own practice. With the support of both parents, no matter the approach, he has surpassed every expectation and defied every stereotype. Unfortunately, being the best of the best doesn’t protect us from what can feel like the greatest blessing or the most horrible curse - life. The trials and tribulations of the black man are often steeped in a dedicated tradition of strong and fortified masculinity. But what happens when the veil between perception and reality is torn? We do our best to remain strong as the men that the world expects to see. However, that energy comes with an expiration date. Vince Jr. has reached his breaking point. And he may not be the only one. What You Don’t See is a theatrical depiction of one of today’s most prevalent struggles - the desire to simply live. We will introduce a story that binds eight men together who need help in different ways and are searching to find it. This exposure of the daily frustration that African American men have with mental wellness will grip you in ways that you can’t even imagine. Take this journey with us into the doors of the Sacred Heart Hospital and see for yourself.

This exhibition showcases a collection of thoughtfully designed functional pottery that balances elegance with simplicity. Each piece is made to be held and used, with careful attention to form, weight, and pattern that invites comfort and ease. Ascher's love of glazing shines through in contrasting textures and clean lines that spark curiosity and draw the eye. The “lifted lines” in the work, both visual and tactile, highlight the relationship between surface and form, guiding the hand as much as the eye. Areas of exposed clay beside smooth glazes create a quiet tension, encouraging intimate interaction and offering moments of rest. The exhibition celebrates the quiet joy found in well-made, beautifully considered objects

Of Light and Shadow captures the hidden magic of forests while also inviting viewers to reflect on their own relationships and support systems. At the core of Loncar’s art practice lies a fascination with trees. Her large-scale drawings and collages are inspired by recent discoveries about tree life, including their ability to smell, taste, touch, sense danger, and communicate with one another. In Of Light and Shadow, she specifically focuses on the quiet interdependency of root systems, using them as a model for how humans may better support one another through times of hardship or change. The anthropomorphic roots in her collages even resemble human hands, transporting viewers directly into the work. Together, these pieces explore a broader theme of community and emphasize how individuals can come together to care for one another.

Ellis Island served as the portal for immigrants coming into the USA from 1892 to 1954. Before its closing, an estimated 12 million people passed through on their way to a new life in America. This one-hour musical geared towards young audiences captures the essence of their journey. A wonderful supplement to the school curriculum, Ellis Island artfully tells the story of how our ancestors began to call America their home. Today, many US citizens are descendants of those same immigrants. Because it relates to current events, audiences are in rapt attention as they relate to characters in the show.
